As of May 1, 2025 by emergency action, NOAA Fisheries has prohibited possession of recreationally caught Atlantic cod in all federal waters south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.More information can be found below or at Northeast Multispecies (Groundfish): Recreational Fishing | NOAA Fisheries.Current recreational fishing regulations for Atlantic cod in New York State waters is 5 fish at a minimum length of 23”. The season remains open through May 31, and then closes for all of June, July, and August. Check regulations for neighboring states before fishing in their waters. Possession of Atlantic cod by federally permitted for-hire vessels is prohibited effective May 1, regardless of whether they are fishing in state or federal waters.
